One of New South Wales’ longest-running pipe bands — built on four veterans, a borrowed set of pipes, and a tradition that has never once missed a Wednesday.
Thirty people gathered at the Railway Institute Hall in Hurstville. Among them, four veterans of the 30th Battalion, a borrowed set of pipes, and enough conviction to found what would become one of Sydney’s most enduring pipe bands.
They played in civvies while saving for kilts. Their buckles were cast at the NSW Railway Foundry in Everleigh. They charged sixpence a head at Rockdale Palace Castle dances, tea and cakes at interval. And they never stopped.
“For eighty years, the sound of the pipes and drums has echoed across St George, Sutherland and beyond. Since 1946, our band has proudly carried Scottish tradition through community service, commemorations, celebrations and performance.”
